All the US cases have been mild. The only death reported today was a 23-month child in Texas who was infected in Mexico.
So far the death rate is about 6% in Mexico, which is not different from other strains of influenza. And within 6 months we will almost certainly have a vaccine.
There is absolutely no need to panic.

At the moment, we don't know why the US cases are so much milder than the cases in Mexico. It is possible that the circulating strains are slightly different.
There are other factors that suggest the flu would not be nearly as problematic in the US: 1) the weather is already turning warm, making the condition less favorable for mass transmission, 2) Mexico City is very dense with 20 million residents, including 5 million per day in the subway system, while in the US especially California the population density is vastly lower.
At this moment, I don't think the risk of dying of swine flu is any more than dying of, say, car accidents or falling off the roof or drowning.
CDC recommends people avoid crowds and wash hands with soap and water frequently. If you have flu-like symptoms, see a doctor or go to ER immediately. The swine flu can be cured with a couple of antiviral drugs if caught early (first 48 to 72 hours).
36000 people die of "usual" influenza every year in the US. Hopefully more people will get vaccinated this winter.

That is another mystery of the different US--Mexico infection patterns. The cases in Mexico have been concentrated in adults 20 to 50 years, but the US cases are a lot of school children.
The severe cases and deaths in Mexican adult patients involve "cytokine storm". This is sort of like SARS. The flu virus provokes overreaction of the host immune system, which floods the lungs with fluid and causes potentially fatal pneumonia.
Children are at higher risk of transmission because schools can be a hotbed for transmission. Children have a lot of direct contact with each other than adults. In turn, parents are more likely to contract the infection from their school-age children. So it's probably a good idea to wash the kids' hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer frequently.
Although viruses can be airborne, the more likely medium is through touch of contaminated surfaces.

Even if a schoolmate (not classmate) has the swine flu, it doesn't mean everyone in the school has been infected.
It's flu, not an insidious asymptomatic silent disease. If one has high fever, body aches, cough, or nausea/vomiting --- if one has flu-like symptoms, go see a doctor and get treated. If one doesn't have any symptoms, one does not have flu (swine or otherwise).

Tamiflu is effective on some strains of influenza but not others. It does work on this H1N1 strain that causes swine flu (and so does Relenza, but not amantadine).
Most people infected with influenza can get well on their own -- with adequate supportive care in a hospital. The 1910s flu epidemic killed a lot of people, partly because the hygiene and medical care were much worse then than they are now. Yes, more people will die, but then more people will die from other causes too.

That might be one element, but another more important reason is that the flu originated there. When it first started, nobody knew it was a new strain of flu. Hospitals and doctors assumed this was just your average old flu and did not pay much attention. A lot of patients didn't know how severe it can be and delayed seeking medical care. There was no public health alerts for several weeks, when the virus ran wild in high-density places (schools, subway, restaurants). Until someone finally got suspicious and analyzed the virus.
Now we know. Now people are on the look-out. Not being No.1 is a good thing. If you treat quickly, quarantine quickly, alert the public quickly, transmission can be quelched effectively.

The reality is that most strains of human influenza virus circulating around the world every year are strains shared between humans and pigs. The flu vaccines we get every fall are made on the basis of the most prevalent strains extracted from places and communities where pig and humans live closely in that particular year.
Pigs and humans have been sharing flu viruses for thousands of years. This new H1N1 virus is just a brand new strain that recently jumped from pigs to humans. There are plenty of old strains that go freely between pigs and humans la.

Actually, the flu virus going around the world every winter most often come from Asia, especially China and SE Asia because of the large and high-density populations of pigs and humans, and the close proximity of both species. These strains, although not "novel" or "glamorous," like this one, kill hundreds of thousands of people every year around the world.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have warned people to stay home if either they or their children are sick.
"That's good advice but, unfortunately, nearly half of private-sector workers in the United States don't have a single paid sick day," Debra L. Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women & Families, said in a statement. "The same is true for nearly four in five low-wage workers. And nearly 100 million workers don't have a paid sick day they can use to care for a sick child. For them, staying home means losing pay and, perhaps, losing their job. In this economy, that's a terrible choice to have to make."
