				在单位认识的同事,大多是来自五湖四海,为了一个共同的目标聚集到一起来的,所以大家说话和我在北方听到的并无多少本质的不同。刚来的时候,四处流窜买东买西填补我那贫瘠的窝。有时候到当地的一些红脖子白人的车库倾售,搬家大甩卖踩点,碰到一些年迈的本地人,他们说话的方式总是让我很新奇。第一个给我留下深刻印象的是他们的发音。我不知怎么形容,简单的说,他们比较喜欢用上颚末端的部位发声,所以有时你会觉得有些词他们就这样不经意地划过,不象电视里人说话那样清晰明了,字字铿锵。听惯了标准的北美英语,乍听到截然不同的南方口音,真是让我欢喜。而且我刚开始还存有不正确的印象,觉得那些老年南方人说话的方式和黑人兄弟很象,很象,简直一般无二。

				luoluo, I chose an apt which is less than 1 mile from where I'll be working, and no traffice lights at all on the way. I won't have enough time for Spanish learning whlie driving.

				俺有段时间住三番DOWN TOWN,每天开30多迈(单程)去乡下的办公室上班
每天早上看进城的车堵了能有将近10迈,而俺奔驰在出城的路上,俺的心情就无比舒畅

lindamn 你细想想,哪儿会有和败金同样有趣,同样爱科学,同样喜杀LV鼠,同样NYC 的人存在呢?(KNOWING, CAMELLA, DROPBY...等等同样有趣的NYER除外).

第一次发现用语的不同,是在和当地小孩打球的时候。刚开始,听到他们动不动就一个“I appreciate it”,一时间转不过弯来。后来就明白是“Thank you”的意思。在北方也听到人这么说过,不过很少,而且一般都是强调感激,比如“Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it”,这儿不,这儿是上来就给你一个“I appreciate it”,“Thank you”用得极少。
这样的例子挺多。有比如当你兴致勃勃地讲述某桩得意之作时,他们附和,会表情亲热地说“Well how's that?”表示对你的同意和赞许,相当于我们说“哟,真的麽?”,“哎呀,可不!”,嘿,你可~以啊!”。而当他们自己在表述事情时,为了表示自个儿为此很得意,会说“how's that?”,没有那个“well”。
还有一个比较让我新奇的习惯是,他们但凡对比他们年长的人说话,会时不时地说“Yes sir!”--不一定是长辈,只要是年纪比他们大的。
他们在听我对他们讲述我的感想和发现时,大多比较惊奇,因为他们自个儿自小就是这样说话,不比我这个外来者,能敏感地注意到不同地区的语言差别。其中有一个告诉我说,他有一次去芝加哥,“shocked by”芝加哥人说话和自己是有怎样大的差别,所以后来努力消除自己说话的口音。这个家伙,我原先还以为不是南方本地人呢。

				Is it a rhetorical question?  If yes I am only aware of "How about that?"  But I have NEVER lived in the south.

				我看过不多几个有关南方的电影电视剧,接触过不多几个南方人,感觉南方人的规矩比较老派,总是yes sir,yes ma'am的。
另,他们还有一个口头禅,听你讲话中间会经常说"Is that so?",不是质疑,只是表示他们在听。

				在职场说interesting,大多是为了防惹麻烦上身罢。因为当有人对你发表某些言论观念时,你是说是也不好,说不是也不好。为了2方面都不得罪,人们就会频频地用ah, that's interesting...
我听过一个人的面试经历,她前面几个面试结果都不错,所以底子比较硬,声气也比较壮。话说有一日她又在一个校园骗工作餐吃,听到2个当地系里的faculty在谈论一个人,因为是在同一个领域,所以她对这个人也知之甚祥,她,居然开始,兴致勃勃地和他们开始gossip! 当时这两人的面色就开始不对,她当时也立时知道不妙。后来OFFER果然没到手。

				上来抓狂一下:正在跟人测试,这个counterparty 说话特别GAY ,  软软的象个小老太太,我听得难受死了。mmd 真烦人!
最喜欢跟伦敦的counterparty 们测试,澳洲的也不错,虽然过程一样繁琐恼人,至少口音好听,可以yy 的把没见过面的对方想像成clive owen
