Well, you know, as soon as I heard the news my mind was immediately slipping into the direction of conspiracy theories...
Have you heard the recent (Inspector General's Office?) report that the military lied, yes, LIED, about what they did during 9/11. Most of the emergency actions after the first WTC was hit that they claim they did were not true. And the report said that the Pentagon and military employees DELIBERATELY LIED about what happened. God knows what happened exactly. The only thing I know is this -- these people (including GWB, DC, KR, and gang and whoever is running the show behind the scene) are entirely capable of the worst scenarios you cannot imagine.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 00_pf.html
I remember a line in a movie whose title I don't remember: The biggest trick of the Devil is to convince people that he didn't exist.
The biggest accomplishment of the modern, red-white-and-blue brand of democracy is to convince the people that they are free.

This is not really true. It's not that Democrats are actively promoting gay marriage and abortion, but that Republicans and conservative media are constantly yelling about Democrats' "libral agenda" and using gay marriage and abortion (and teaching evolution in schools) as their targets. Democrats have no voice. So most people do have the impression that Democrats are 整天拿GAY MARRIAGE, STEM CELL RESEARCH说事儿. That's the success of the propaganda of the right.

I have to disagree, especially on the issue of gay marriage. It is a subject nobody wants to touch, except as a weapon by conservative pundits to attack non-conservative candidates.
Stem cell is a different subject. You can bet a lot of politicians on the right will drift into its support as they themselves and their donors get older and face Parkinson's disease, Alzheimers, diabetes, etc. Stem cell ban is a cause of the extreme religious fundamentalists. The public have repeatedly shown support for stem cell research in polls. It's not a popular cause to ban stem cell research except in the very deeply red states.
Liberman's loss at the Connecticut primary 2 days ago is seen by many Democrats as the revival of the "true" Democratic Party. He lost because he is a conservative and has supported the Bush administration on most issues, especially on the Iraqi war. His defeat was seen as a sign of people being fed up with the current policy and the current Democrats' spinelessness.

Yeah I was happy about Liberman's lost too. I saw this as a major sign the the public felt fed up with currently policy and a strong call to end the Iraqi war.

Ironically, I am strongly against US pulling out of Iraq right now. They started the whole mess with a limp and not-even-convincing bunch of lies. They screwed up an entire country. Then they just abandon the poor people who first got their country bombed invaded and are now living in hell. Well, it's about time the US took some responsibility and at least TRY to fix the mess that they have created in the first place. But we all know what happened in Korea and Vietnam --- really good at creating messes in somebody else's house, but cleaning up their own shit afterward ... uh ... not so good.

That's ok, they were in pretty shitty situation to begin with. Now if US pulls out relatively quickly, they will have to give the credit to someone. Just make sure the US manipulated so-called-elected government gets the credit, not the death squads.

I am digressing, but did you guys hear about Lieberman's website crashed right before the primary? Of course he blamed it on the other side and bloggers who tried to hack his site. Somebody did some digging and found out something funny. For a multi-million dollar compaign he is running, guess how much he pays for the hosting service?
$15.

Do you really think the same power that controls the government and policies now will not control the next government be it Hillary or Howard, Giulianni or Pat Buchannan? What does it all matter?
I'm sure they don't care much about abortion rights or anti-abortion amendments. So GO HILLARY!

That's what I thought. In fact, I hope Rice will be the other candidate, so there will absolutely a female president.
And Mr. Clinton's resume will be very interesting.

I just came back from the US yesterday. Phoenix Sky Harbor was 'people mountain people sea' at 4:30 am. The lines at the ticket counters and security check were miles and miles long. I was flagged as 'high risk' and had some 'body search' after I passed the x-ray machine and the metal detector. I wonder if it had something to do with my Chinese passport. My advise is go to the airport 2-3 hours in advance (depends on how busy your airport is) even for domestic flight. I have to go back in couple of weeks again. I am not looking forward. The whole thing in one word is 'chaotic'.
By the way, did they find the bombs on the planes already? I thought they caught them planning.

I am not the only person who's skeptical of the recent hoopla.
The timing is political
We should be sceptical about this alleged plot, and wary of politicians who seek to benefit
Craig Murray
Friday August 18, 2006
The Guardian
Nine days on, nobody has been charged with any crime. For there to be no clear evidence yet on something that was "imminent" and would bring "mass murder on an unbelievable scale" is, to say the least, peculiar. A 24th person, arrested amid much fanfare on Tuesday, was quietly released without charge the following day.
Media analysis has been full of information from police and security sources. By and large journalists are honourable in this kind of reporting. Their sources, unfortunately, are not - viz the non-existent ricin, the Forest Gate "chemical weapons vest", or Jean Charles de Menezes leaping the barriers. Unlike the herd of security experts, I have had the highest security clearance; I have done a huge amount of professional intelligence analysis; and I have been inside the spin machine. And I am very sceptical about the story that has been spun.
None of the alleged terrorists had made a bomb. None had bought a plane ticket. Many did not have passports. It could be pretty difficult to convince a jury that these individuals were about to go through with suicide bombings, whatever they bragged about on the net.
What is more, many of those arrested had been under surveillance for more than a year - like thousands of other British Muslims. And not just Muslims. Like me. Nothing from that surveillance had indicated the need for early arrests.
Then an interrogation in Pakistan revealed this amazing plot to blow up multiple planes. Of course, the interrogators of the Pakistani dictator have ways of making people sing like canaries. As I witnessed in Uzbekistan, you can get the most extraordinary information from people desperate to stop or avert torture. What you don't get is the truth.
We also have the extraordinary question of Bush and Blair discussing arrests the weekend before they were made. Why? Both in domestic trouble, they longed for a chance to change the story. The intelligence from Pakistan, however dodgy, gave them a chance. Comparisons with 9/11 were all over front pages.
And we have the appalling political propaganda of John Reid, the home secretary, warning us all in advance of the evil that threatens us and complaining that some people "don't get" why we have to abandon traditional liberties.
We will now never know if any of those arrested would have gone on to make a bomb or buy a plane ticket. Most do not fit the "loner" profile you would expect. As they were all under surveillance, and on airport watch lists, there could have been little danger in letting them proceed closer to maturity: that is what we would have done with the IRA.
In all of this, the one thing of which I am certain is that the timing is deeply political. This is more propaganda than plot. More than 1,000 British Muslims have been arrested under anti-terrorist legislation, but only 12% have been charged. That is harassment on an appalling scale. Of those charged, 80% were acquitted. Most of the few convictions - just over 2% of arrests - are nothing to do with terrorism, but some minor offence the police happened upon while trawling through the lives they have wrecked.
Plainly, Islamist terrorism does exist. But its growth is encouraged by our adherence to neocon foreign policy, by our support for appalling regimes abroad, and by our trampling on the rights of Muslims in the UK. Now David Cameron has joined Blair and Reid in the rush to benefit politically from the fear thus engendered. Be very wary of politicians who seek to benefit from terror.
Be sceptical. Be very, very sceptical.
・ Craig Murray, who was posted to Uzbekistan from 2002 to 2004, is the author of Murder in Samarkand - A British Ambassador's Controversial Defiance of Tyranny in the War on Terror
Author of this commentary was a British ambassodor to Uzbekistan.

I beg to differ. Government is about preserving its own interest and the bureaucratic status quo. Government is about getting by with doing as little as possible. Government is about eating, taking gifts, and flying around the world on someone else's money (Jack Abramoff anyone?).
Case in point: Washington Post reported today that, after 5 years and $170 million, the massive project of upgrading FBI computer system was "useless." (
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01485.html)
I've never worked for the federal government, nor do I have the desire to, but I do have a relatively close view from where I'm living.
