Respiratory virus is the single biggest cause of cold. Once you get viral infection, the bacteria living inside your nose and respiratory track can flare up because the viral infection lowers your usual immune system.
Cold (and flu) virus is transmitted almost entirely through touching. Someone carrying the virus touches a solid surface (door knobs, desks, money, cups, keyboard, anything), you touch the same surface, then you touch your face, pick your nose, rub your eyes, put your contact lenses in without washing your hands -- you get infected. It's really that simple.
Yes, soap plus hot water is the most effective. Just be careful don't scald yourself.
To prevent flu, get a vaccine shot.
