I really hate Orlando. Not as much as I hate Las Vegas but close.

Me too. I can't say I hate Orlando. But I just do not care for it at all. Once or twice I have attended a conference there and have never visited Disney (I dislike and despise Disney very much, along with Disney movies, I liked Warner Bros when I was little). But I did go to Universal Studio once, because the organizer gave VIP passes so I could jump the lines and go to hot attractions. Not impressed at all. I just don't care much for theme parks.

I hate Disney too. So pretentious . LV is fake but it doesn't try to be cute or sweet. I am not into theme parks either.

Don't be so harsh. Disney is for kids. It is ok that you don't like it. But kids do and that's all that matters.
Also, Las Vegas are for shallow people. It is ok that you don't like it. But shallow people do and that's all that matters.

Of course, though I don't think Lisa Simpson would like Disney -- but of course, not every family is blessed with a kid like Lisa

In that family, Homer Simpson might love Disney -- if not Disney, definitely Las Vegas.

Wait a minute. Disney is not just a park for kids. I went to a book signing event a while ago by the author of a recent exhaustive biography on Walt Disney. It's neither a glowing hero worship nor demonization of Disney, but the stuff he revealed about how Disney ran his operation and his megalomaniacal visions for Epcot and Disney World seem pretty chilling to me.

For example, the company was initially founded by both Walt and his brother and it was called Disney Brothers. At some point Walt forced his brother out to take total control and cut his name out of the company name. Also he ran the company like a cult and gave the creative credit and control to no one. He made his workers work like slaves and compensated them with spiritual fulfillment. He wanted to build Epcot into a futuristic Ren Min Gong She that display HIS total vision of life and the world. One comment about Disney World/Disneyland is how CONTROLLED the parks are designed. You are constantly told where to go and what to do. A visit to Disenyland is designed as a scripted tour in which the tourist participate in a movie that has been meticulously mapped out and directed. You're a pawn and completely submit to the predetermined scheme. Of course, people find assurance and safety in being told what to do all the time, and that's what's important. But the ideology drives me up the wall.

Geez, it is chilling. Your description reminds me of those guided tour designed for foreign visitors to China in the 80s, no poverty, no rough neighborhood, no corruption ....
I am no fan of Orlando or Vegas. But if you hold a gun against me and force me to choose where I would like to spend a week I would have to choose Vegas

He wanted to build Epcot into a futuristic Ren Min Gong She that display HIS total vision of life and the world.
I didn't know that. Each attraction in Epcot is sponsored by a big corporation, Future of Communication by AT&T, Universe of Energy by Exxon, etc. etc. It's like a huge showcase, a year-round World Fair, not sure how close it is to Walt Disney's vision.
I actually like Epcot, it is less crowded than other Disney parks. OK, I'm probaly the only one at fabvalley who likes Disney parks, have never failed to have a good time when I visited one. Somehow the negative adjectives mentioned in this thread just didn't pop up in my mind when "I came, I saw, I played."
Theme parks in Orlando area are so much more than just Disney parks, and what Central Florida can offer is so much more than just theme parks (now I sound like a vacation brochure). When Orlando is considered equivalent to Disney or Evil, it's not fair. Especially when Disney parks are not even located in Orlando, they are in Kissimmee.

Helen I doubt you really enjoy Disney for Disney. I bet if you were not with the kids who were so thrilled about it, you would find it pretty boring too.

You are constantly told where to go and what to do.
就是这种感觉,it's designed that way。But it works, and I suppose if you have a crowd of x0 thousand people in the park every day you've got to have some organisation and mechanism.

I don't see any problem doing so. He enjoys water and sand a lot. We took him to a theme park for company picnic and he didn't like it.
I will send him to skiing school at 3. Unfortunately, it is not as convenient to ski, camp or hike after we relocated. Of course I'd rather raise him in Seattle. Our friends in Seattle have no problem taking their kids to these activities. For now he can enjoy beaches and sandy playgrounds.
