Collaboration, Miscellany

前几天写作业要回答这条问题: Is world music an appropriation or a collaboration? 要去查我亲爱的Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary才看懂了:
Definition
collaborate (WORK WITH)
verb
to work with someone else for a special purpose:
Two writers collaborated on the script for the film.
A German company collaborated with a Swiss firm to develop the product.
The British and Italian police collaborated in catching the terrorists.
刚学会一个新词隔天便碰上活生生的例子: “Schott’s Original Miscellany” (2002)、 “Schott’s Food & Drink Miscellany” (2003)――这个单词更难懂了,虽然书的开首便提供了Oxford English Dictionary的解释:
MISCELLANY [mis.sel.iny] noun 1. A collection, medley, or mixtre. 2: A collection of papers or treaties on a paticular subject. 3. A volume or publication containing miscellaneous information of general interest on a variety of subjects.
但到底说的是啥呢?我先列几个标题:Characteristics Of Living Things、Some Medical Shorthand、Antiquarian Paper Sizes、Yiddish――看懂了吗?
其实就是作者Ben Schott收集了一些极细微(也可以说是无聊)―― “It is, perhaps, possible to live one’s life without Schott’s Original Miscellany (p.1)”――的「小」事实(facts),一些你我平常天天碰到用到听到却从未用心研究过的东西、事情、语言等等。像刚才说的”Some Medical Shorthand”,这个标题下从AAA到x/52共列出82个医生护士在写报告时常用的缩语;比方 “bd: twice daily”、FHx: family history”等等;158页内容全是这些东西,从赌术内行话到世界杯赛果,从花语到莎士比亚剧目,从纸张尺寸到著名影星的死亡原因......一一极清楚漂亮的罗列。另外那本 “Schott’s Food & Drink Miscellany”也大同小异,只不过
