When travel unravels...

Agood memory can be a mixed blessing because it means you are also stuck with a near- permanent record of your own past adventures, good and bad. My early journeys were neither glamorous nor particularly eventful, although today they would be unthinkable, if not actually illegal.

As a small child I was regularly sent alone, by train, from Doncaster in Yorkshire to my convent in the south of England with a yellow label around my neck, to be claimed, like a parcel, at Waterloo station by a member of Universal Aunts, the school escort agency, wearing a matching yellow label.

This seemed normal at the time, but I recently found a letter I had written to my mother when I was eight years old, thanking her for a lovely holiday but pointing out politely that I had been sent back a week too soon. In it was included the receipt from Universal Aunts

Seconds later he lifted up my Laura Ashley summer dress and covered my bare stomach with kisses.
 Wah...

Mi papa, who's never traveled anywhere in the past 4 decades, saw a program on TV the other day. A bunch of Chinese travel agents gave a harrowing warning to women traveling on their own: In Canton they cut off your arms for your jewelry! Italian men would molest you in broad daylight! In Indonesia... He forgot what they said. Horrible, he only remembered. You can imagine how freaked out about all this considering my travel plans. Poor thing.

Hahaha, considering how unsophisticated Doncaster is, this girl must have been on quite a journey, transported by 'Universal Aunts' (what a funny name) around the world.

FT again, huh? Her writing is pretty funny.
