Talk of The Nation

New York Times Arts Moview A.O.Scott's review

This American Life我也常听。

In the Shadow of the City (http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1174

小K,wait wait don't tell me好玩吧?

Marketplace is produced by American Public Media, which apparently is separate from NPR. Therefore it's not on NPR's Web site. You can find it here:

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/

Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me often has some political or social celebrities on their program. The week when they had the prosecutor Fitzgerald (Scooter Libby case) on was hilarious.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Young

On March 31, 2005, Young was admitted to a hospital in New York for treatment for a brain aneurysm. He was treated successfully by a minimally invasive neuroradiological procedure. Prior to undergoing the procedure, he wrote the first eight songs of a new album, Prairie Wind, in Nashville, with session musicians that included regular Young sideman Ben Keith on lap and pedal steel guitars. The last two songs on the album were written after his aneurysm procedure. Many of the songs, such as "Fallin' Off the Face of the Earth," seem to be inspired by Young's brush with mortality, the recent death of his father (who suffered senile dementia), as well as a connection with his Manitoba roots.

MARKET PLACE

THIS AMERICAN LIFE, 非常好听,周日下午. :love015:

Are you talking about Marketplace (weekdays) or Marketplace Money? The latter is a weekend hour program about personal finance and talks about basic stuff. The former is Monday through Friday. It's a news program that reports market news and global financial stuff. They often report on China (at least weekly and sometimes almost every day). Occasionally they have news about new gadgets and products on the market. They talk about the stock market a little bit every day but not in depth.

Marketplace (weekdays).
They talk about stock market fair amount. What moves it, mostly. And market has moved A LOT recently.
What bores me a bit is they have no depth in their news. Like the sub prime mortgage fall out: Mortgage backed securities are sophisticatedly engineered piece of product. It is just such a fascinating cross over between finance and math, beautiful, yet imperfect. How and why the system failed in such a large scale is incredibly interesting subject. Yes so far, I have not read any in-depth report on this, despite the huge impact and massive amount of finger pointing going on. Not only that, there is not even a good comprehensive article to help people understand how the system works. It is just painted as a "greed" machine that finally broke down. That's not true. It is a machine that worked, overloaded by greed, and broke down.

Yeah, I am also wondering why the quant models failed on such a huge scale. It will be really interesting to have an understanding, but neither have I seen an article that talks about it in depth. Actually I don't need anything in depth, not like I would understand it. But something more than just "greed", please, I am not 8-year-old.

What do they (the generalized selling madness) know that others don't that's driving the massive sell-off?

Yes, I like Marketplace a lot, especially when they report on China. I feel their style is friendly, vivid, objective and passionate.

Knowing, please ignore the stock part these days. Just go to this website to download some mp3. I really hope you'll enjoy them too.

Yeah, they sometimes report weird stuff that you wouldn't see anywhere else and have no political implications at all. It's just refreshing. Like the recent story on guys hiring women to insidiously accompany them in bars to get access to other women. I have to admit the psychology totally works.

Quizas, thanks for recommending "The story".

hmm missed this thread earlier. on one level i think marketplace is done well - it's more interesting and expansive than sound bites on network tv.

but yes, i agree with knowing that it barely scratches the surface. i understand that they are not targeting the finance crowd, but it's still strange that you can listen to their entire program without actually hearing or understanding what moved the market that day. same goes for their international coverage - they could do better.

my faves are wait wait, fresh air and this american life.
