刚开始看的有点不耐烦, 欧洲人拍的殖民地, 殖民地的白人圈子闷得乱搞男女关系. 不过拍的很美, 河流和碧绿的山和海, 延绵的稻田. 晨雾中的橡胶园， 工人头上的烛火闪烁． 还有两个美女, 一个英姿刹爽但有点塑料花的CATHERIN DENEUVE和一个娇嫩得象茉莉花的越南美女.
看到后来有点灵魂了, 可惜剧情和冲突太多在白人这一边. 没办法, 新拍的THE PAINTED VEIL也一样. 已经不错了, 多数欧洲小说里我们只看到海外殖民地发财归来的人物.
我不太能相信这个故事的假设. 殖民者正式收养本地人, 法(男)越(女)爱情故事能被越南大众作为政治偶像到处颂扬. 情人没有努力往政治意义靠, 但里面的视角和细节更打动我，让我信服.
有一点挺有意思, 华人被称为MANDARIN, 被视为殖民者帮凶. 难怪东南亚排华情绪那么严重.

The Painted Veil 小说是很好的，但是电影被 Ed Norton 变成了一个 vanity project，满足他的自我膨胀心，就完蛋了。剧本里还是保留了一些毛姆的尖锐成分，特别是 Toby Jones 演的那个。
Indochine 属于典型的法国 epic 片儿。他们特别喜欢拍几种类型的电影：1. 花钱特多，情节波澜壮阔，明星众多，但是不带风险，老少咸宜的epic大片；2. 试验性的艺术片吓倒一片人，专门给 Cannes 做的；3. 无厘头喜剧片。Vincent Perez was pretty cute back then, but has now faded with age.
