The day you open **** is THE special occasion。

Sideways tells a lot of the characters with the wines they drink.
Take Giamatti's character, he appreciates Sanford pinots and Andrew Murray Rhone blends, to name two of the many wines he drunk on the trip. These two are immediately pleasing, lush, rounded on the palate, juicy and with lots of fruit, "new world" versions of "old world" wines. They are more sensual than cerebral, which is what Giamatti is. He is not as deep as he thinks (look how his book flopped), afterall, the wines he likes, well, how I shall I put it, are a bit of a come on, just like the girl-interest in the movie.
The good thing is that Giamatti is a sensualist, but the bad thing is that he is also an idiotic snob. The famous phrase of the movie is that "I am not drinking any fucking merlot!" Yeah, it's funny dialogue, but as a self-professed vino, this is an incredibly idiotic comment to make. There are beautiful merlots out there, Laird, Westerly Vineyard (right where he did his tasting trip!), and the whole right bank of Bourdeax. With his palate, I can't imagine why he wouldn't like wines from Fransac. What he has is middle-aged narrowmindedness. And he is so protective of what he already knows, that he holds what he doesn't know in contempt.
Now Maya on the hand other... she is a gem!

Yes, the characterization in the motive is so precise and so ruthless! On both men, actually. Really uncompromising. The script refuses to prettify them. The comedy elements kind of mask the pointedness and critical nature of the writing, somehow dilute the "edge" in a casual viewer, but if you pay attention to how it handles the flaws of these 2 male characters, you'd be very impressed. Both are losers, but both are damned real.
And I'm not ashamed to say I see myself in Giamatti's character, even though I fully acknowledge that he IS a loser and all of his losses are his own fault. I can't help but admire the writer who cut open his/my flaws so clearly, so right on.
Maya is the only idealistic character in the movie, and the director admitted as much in an interview I saw.

Oh one more thing how the movie used wine to show Miles is a contradicting fellow. Remember how he said he won't drink merlot? But... the star of his cellar, the bottle that he cherished beyond all others, the 61 Cheval Blanc, is a Merlot and Cab Franc blend from Bordeaux. So much for "I am not drinking any fucking merlot!"

Miles is a sad little man who is best characterized as a looser. He is a looser not because he doesn't have money, has dead-end job, or failed to publish his book. He is a looser because, in my personal objective opinion, he is not at peace with the world or with himself. For all the years he has spent on the planet earch, he has not figured out or has the courage to figure out, and accept, who and what exactly he is. In comparison, his looser player friend is a lot more likeable ---- he doesn't have a concsience and is callous as it gets. He is a laugh, and Miles is such a soulful bore.
ps, jun you should in no way compare yourself with Miles.

Washington, like Morgan Freeman, really should take up more bad-guy roles. They've been typecast for too long. I remember seeing a midnight movie on TV once, in which a very young Freeman played a semipsychotic street thug. Cool. That's why Washington won Oscar for Training Day. People were so shocked and impressed by his against type performance.
Karen讲得好!What he has is middle-aged narrowmindedness. And he is so protective of what he already knows, that he holds what he doesn't know in contempt.
见过的喜欢葡萄酒的人群中有wine snobs和people who appreciate wine。在传统上不生产酒的地区wine snobs多些,大量产酒的地区people who appreicate wine in a casual way的人多些。 。。
