France is really not playing too well, from the 1 game I saw in the early round. I have not seen Spain play though.

But they did so well in the second half, almost not themselves anymore, and they did the old-fashioned score, 3:1. Spain just has been having this curse, they always got everyone's hopes so high and then made an quick exit.

Image

Image

Wasn't Klinsman in the same generation as van Basten? Both were forwards, both were quite successful, both are now coaches. And Klinsman was world champion wasn't he? And Germany is still in the tournament! He obviously has an edge over the "Lord and Taylor shirt model." Is it because he is not as pretty? Is it me or do Chinese football fans have a Dutch complex of some sort? Why?

I have to have to have to complain again about the Brazil--Ghana match. Ghana had several shots that were damned close, and the corner kick-to-head shot in the 2nd half was almost almost in but for Dida's pure luck. Both the 2nd and 3rd Brazil goals were clearly off side. I don' t know what the linesman was doing (and if I'm not mistaken it was the same assistant referee). A lot of the yellow cards also seemed too severe, especially the silly fake-diving incident that sent off the Ghanaian kid. :speechless001: I still love Brazil but I can't stand this kind of officiating. Ghana played so well, it's a shame the match went down this way.

Well, as Knowing put it, being rich (AC's case) and pretty (vB) is almost like suffering brain damage at age two, so you really need to give it to van Basten that he managed to excel as a player and, later, as a coach. It's jut like seeing a blond with big boobs, but when you discover that she is smart (though not very often, sadly), you kind of ignore the other smart skirts and said to yourself, wow!!!

I hadn't until I saw your post.

Not unlike the fluff reporting NBC always does for Olympic figure skating competitions.

I don't strongly "root for" any team to win in most matches, with the exception of Brazil of course, at least to semifinals so that they get to play the full 7 matches.

Sometimes, football is just football.

But from the article one can see how the sport catches so much passion in people.

‘Offside’ is one of the trickiest call. Ghana was taking a great risk by pushing its defending players close to the mid-field. I was searching for more definite explanation of ‘offside’, and I ran into this :party003: :

”… Offside penalties are invoked anytime a referee's favorite team gets in a bind. In American football offside is easy to spot: it's when someone crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. In soccer, however, the penalty can be assessed at virtually any time. It relates to a player's roster position and where he is physically compared to the rest of his team. Most people need a supercomputer to figure it out, yet English and Latin American soccer fans can do it in their heads after a couple pints of beer…’

Two yellow cards so far.

England seem to have woken up, finally. About time too! Don't think they are rougher than many other teams?

Rooney stepped on the opponent's sensitive area, and then pushed and shoved another person. I don't think the red card was too harsh. Rooney was being an asshole from the start. I'm afraid he deserved it. The ref was probably fed up with him antics.

The yellow on Ronaldo for handball, I thought was a little too harsh. I couldn't agree that was intentional.

Sorry, I just watched the replay in slow motion for the red card. Gee, if the Portugal player couldn't have kids anymore, Rooney would be responsible.
Brazil didn't act much like a champion in the first half. I hate PK. I hope there is no more.

Brazil deserves to lose this match. France has played vastly better. It's all determined by the coach's strategy. Funny how a large portion of the result is determined by pre-match factors (not unlike choreography's importance in figure skating).

Agree with Jun, there's still some "self-conscious" in his behavious in front of the audience. He knows that the camera would not miss him or his wife. He acted too well and too natually while does not look at the camera even one second. That make me feel embarrased for him.

Kind of a follow-up about various players who had committed various offense.
England's Rooney Draws Two-Match Ban

By JOHN PYE
The Associated Press
Saturday, July 8, 2006; 5:03 PM

BERLIN -- Striker Wayne Rooney was suspended for two competitive international matches and fined $4,085 by a FIFA disciplinary panel that reviewed his ejection from England's World Cup quarterfinal loss to Portugal.

Rooney was given a red card by referee Horacio Elizondo for stomping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho in the 62nd minute of the quarterfinals.

He denied it was intentional, saying he was "gobsmacked" by the charge, but a FIFA disciplinary committee on Saturday found him guilty of violent conduct. Rooney faced an automatic one-game suspension by virtue of the straight red, but the committee doubled the punishment.

Rooney will be suspended for the first two of England's 12 qualifying matches for the 2008 European Championship. The short-tempered Manchester United forward has a history of ejections at the top level, dating back to December 2002 when _ at age 17 _ he was red-carded in a Premier League match for Everton.

England opens qualifying with games against Andorra on Sept. 2 and Macedonia four days later. The teams are the lowest-ranked in a group also containing Croatia, Israel, Russia and Estonia.

In other punishments announced Saturday, two Argentina players were suspended for their parts in a skirmish that followed their quarterfinal loss to Germany.

Leandro Cufre was banned for four matches and fined $8,170 for kicking Germany defender Per Mertesacker in a melee that followed the penalty shootout at Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Maxi Rodriguez was suspended for two matches and fined $4,085 for throwing punches during the skirmish. Cufre, an unused substitute in the match, was handed a red card after the final whistle.

Germany midielder Torsten Frings missed the World Cup semifinal loss to Italy because of a suspension stemming from the quarterfinal. In a quick ruling on the eve of the semifinal after new footage of the brawl was shown on German and Italian TV, Frings was found guilty of punching Julio Cruz.

"I feel betrayed as it was not what I deserved," Frings was quoted saying in German newspapers. "FIFA destroyed my dream. I was punished for defending myself."

FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said the disciplinary committee did not immediately release comments on its findings.

The disciplinary panel took two days to deliberate Rooney's case and three days for the Argentine pair.

England's Football Association submitted a defense to the disciplinary committee, but Rooney was widely expected to be banned for more than one match. UEFA president Lennart Johansson said he agreed with the original ruling by Elizondo, who will referee Sunday's World Cup final between Italy and France.

After breaking his foot on April 29, Rooney's place at the World Cup was in doubt until just before England's second match against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15.

He was cleared to play against Trinidad, despite lacking match fitness, and went on as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win.

He started the third match against Sweden and the second-round win over Ecuador. In the quarterfinal, he was sent off in the 62nd minute, leaving England a man short for almost an hour. Portugal won on penalties after the match finished 0-0 after 120 minutes.

I am not a cool headed fan as Jun. I have rooted for the same team, Germany, for 16 years. I am so happy that they got the 3rd place this time. It looks like even without Klinsmann, Hahn, Ballack, and Klose, this young team will be ok in 4 years.
