Post by tiffany » 2006-07-09 18:41

That's one of the unconfirmed rumors. Whatever the Italian guy said, Zidane takes the blame for losing his cool and acting out. He probably cost France the gold.

Words are just words. Sticks and stones. He should know better. I'm surprised how many people defend his action. When I was watching it yesterday with my friend, her husband, and her in-laws, all the in-laws (who are fans of the French, obviously) also said, "Oh that Italian guy must have deserved it."

Uh... No. Haven't you heard of the freedom of speech? Feel free to yell "Nazis" at the German players. If you lose your head and retaliate with violence, you get punished.

That was so f**king dramatic. If someone made it up he would be booed off the stage for being clumsily manipulative.

I don't think it was planned, or it would probably be more effective to use this tactic earlier to get him kicked off. Nevertheless, perhaps teams are now devising psychological warfare in football games...

I agree. He totally lost it while the whole world was watching. There was no sportsmanship and like many others I was astonished and appalled. I feel sorry that he himself chose to patch such a sad end note onto his otherwise splendid soccer career. There is no excuse. He did it.

Whatever, it's only a game.
I feel sorry for Zidane lost the chance to win, also feel sorry for the Italian guy who spoke sth. I'll not believe they set a plot from the beginnin, but when on the "battlefield", people will try to annoy the "enemy" as much as possible. No surprise.
But after all, game is a game. Winning is great but losing is not that bad. I feel kind of sorry, too, for those who were blamed by their own people because of losing. Game is just amusement. It can't help anything serious, or make things already bad worse.

Zidane is Algerian decent and was born in France.
Nobody is saying that Zidane didn’t deserve the red card. I think most people were just too shocked to believe it. We have watched him play for many years. He’s always been a footballer with class. Fans could be very ‘forgiving’ sometimes when it comes to their beloved geniuses. I don’t really care what the Italian player said because for a player like Zidane I am sure there isn’t any trash talk that he hasn’t heard already. Still what he did was totally inexcusable. Other than temporary insanity I cannot think of any other explanation. I disagree that he cost France the champion. They wouldn’t have gone this far with out him. He got the Cup for France once already. He came out of retirement for this one. I think he has done more than enough. That’s it.
Zidane is no doubt one of the greatest football players of all time, at least among the Top 10, maybe even Top 5. It is so very sad that his career had to end like this. Henry said after the game, ‘The only thing I said to him was thank you for football and thank you for France’.

I agree. A game is just a game.

There is a British movie a while ago, about the regular violence committed by English football fans. Elijah Wood was in it, I think. Haven't seen it but sounds interesting.

http://3quarksdaily.blogs.com/3quarksdaily/
Some people are claiming that Materazzi pinched Zidane's nipple and then said something racist to him, and that made him lose his usual cool. It's hard to tell what happened, exactly. No doubt Zidane will explain himself over the next days. In any case, this moment should not be allowed to overshadow his glorious career. I remain in shock, though.

UPDATE: There is slightly clearer video of the actual headbutt here.

UPDATE 2: This is from a profile in The Observer from April of this year:

One of the theories about Zidane as a player is that he is driven by an inner rage. His football is elegant and masterful, charged with technique and vision. But he can still erupt into shocking violence that is as sudden as it is inexplicable. The most famous examples of this include head butting Jochen Kientz of Hamburg during a Champions League match, when he was at Juventus in 2000 (an action that cost him a five match suspension) and his stomping on the hapless Faoud Amin of Saudi Arabia during the 1998 World Cup finals (this latter action was, strangely enough, widely applauded in the Berber community as Zidane's revenge on hated Arab 'extremists').

Zidane's first coaches at AS Cannes noticed quickly that he was raw and sensitive, eager to attack spectators who insulted his race or family. The priority of his first coach, Jean Varraud, was to get him to channel his anger and focus more on his game. According to Varraud, Zidane's first weeks at Cannes were spent mainly on cleaning duty as a punishment for punching an opponent who had mocked his ghetto origins.

By the time he arrived at Juventus, in 1996, he had become known for his self-control and discipline, both on and off the pitch.

Actually, I'm not mad at him (I guess because I was not emotionally invested in either team). I find it fascinating. If he had just elbowed someone or slugged someone in the face or kicked someone in the balls, I'd chalk it up to normal footballer's antics on the field, but given the history described in the blog cited by Tiff and the unusual expression of his rage, I am now a lot more curious about Zidane the person. Hmm... Anyway, I recommend that naturally emotional people, especially men, find ways to regularly express their feelings instead of suppressing them. Suppression will only lead to self-desctructive behavior that is a lot more damaging than occasional break-downs. See a psychologist if you must.

Yet again I'm going to tout the attitude of Brazilian players. They don't take anything seriously and I just love that. I don't remember the last time a Brazilian player gets into a fistfight or a brawl with another team in World Cup. Supposedly Brazil had an infamously violent match with Uraguay in the 50s, but I don't remember any recent incident.

There are quite a bit pushing, punching, stepping, diving around, but this one is blown out of proportion because he is Zidane. He was punished. Game is over. Let’s not over analyze it.

Players from both sides, Germany and Argentina, got penalty for insulting and throwing punches in the after game mess. If the Italian player indeed insulted Zidane with racial comments, I would like to see him get some penalty as well.

Uh... How did he fall victim to our hyped dream?

I think we like watching sports because it is sort of a microcosm and more intense version of life. You see people and conflicts exaggerated in an entertaining and exciting way without leaving your living room. So the stars, like generals on the battlefield, seem larger than life. Nevertheless, I'm fascinated by the unusual expression of Zidane's revenge. If he had simply slugged the guy I would probably have lost interest by now. :laughting015:

the logic is that people (fans) put a mortal guy on a pedestal where he/she doesn't belong or wanna be in the first place, the mortal fall, people say how can u disappoint me like that.

Oh, I see Simon Barnes' logic. He thinks Zidane is a victim of believing in his own mythology. He thinks Zidane was so wrapped up in his own god-like image boosted by his fans that he lost his head when things got a little thick for him on the field.

I think that's a gigantic pile of steaming horse sh*t.

The second article about deciphering the verbal exchange between Materazzi and Zidane is hilarious. Hilarious, I tell you.

Something about Z's people/race/family? Something about someone's mother? Something about M's sister? Typical playgroud fights between boys. LOL. Almost as funny as the "nipple-pinching" theory. I'm sorry. I just had to :f16:

Personally I never considered any one as God or God like. To me Zidane is one of the greatest football players with flaws, and that’s it.
The Italian guy started talking already, he said Zidane said to him ‘arrogantly’ first, ‘If you want my shirt, I will give it to you after the game’, but he didn’t say what he said. There is always trash talk in sports including the mother thing and the F word. I am just not so sure if calling a black man with the N word is trash talk.
