Well, first thing first, People in Turkey are Turks, Kurds, and some Persians. They are not exactly Arabs.
Secondly, Turkey is a politically secular country, and they really really want to join the EU, so they might appear more open. But ask your 七尺白面长发男儿 what's the single most important requirement on his wife? For sure he would say a virgin. :-D
Besides, it is not always dependable to judge a country by her grad students here. It's hardly a representative pool.

Thank GOD Turkey has been secular since the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Ah I am dying to learn more about the history of Istabul and Jerusalem (Damn another place that's unsafe now). It's a f*cking shame that these places, and Beirut, are yet again plunged into war. People haven't changed much since 1000 years ago.

Coincidentally, last Friday on DC Metro, I overheard a middle-aged guy chatting with a couple of youths about Turkey. He is married to a Turkish woman and they go to their beach house in some resort town there every year. The 2 youths just came back from Turkey because one guy's dad was there for a conference on mechanical valves. A couple of names of tourist cities were thrown around.

Turkey is all over the map these days. This month's Saveur features food from Turkey (lots of lamb and lots of eggplants), and beach towns there got written up more than usual.

A couple months ago, there was an article in nytimes on sailing along the coast of Turkey, it looks gorgeous.

DC Metro is not nearly as colorful as NY. Last time I was on a NYC subway with a friend in the evening, I saw a guy chatting up a pretty woman next to him and throwing around stuff like "my agent", "audition", etc. You don't see that in DC...

Smithsonian tours are designed targeting rich people so they can generate income to subsidize their operation and exhibitions. They must be expensive. I guess they are guided by curators or some sort of experts, and the group will travel in style.

If you can afford, it worthes the money.

parts of brooklyn remind me of beacon hill in boston. i'm sooo priced out of anywhere hip in brooklyn, hehe. hipsters need to move into my area to jack up the rent so that i can bask in my rent-controlled glory...

dang, rent stabilized is what i meant... i wish it were rent controlled, i wish.

There is a high threat from terrorism in Egypt. Attacks can be indiscriminate and against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.

On 24 April 2006 there were three explosions at three separate locations in the resort town of Dahab in the Sinai Peninsula, in which 23 people were killed and more than 60 injured. 。。。

On 23 July 2005, three bombs exploded in Sharm al-Sheikh in the Sinai Peninsula. According to the Egyptian authorities 63 people were killed and 124 injured. 。。。

Approximately 838,000 British nationals visit Egypt every year. Most visits are trouble-free. 。。。The crime rate in Egypt is low but you should safeguard valuables including your passport and money.

Egyptian society is conservative and women should dress modestly.。。。

Women are advised to take extra caution when travelling alone as there have been isolated incidents of harassment.

Actually I had at one time considered both Morocco and Turkey at the same time, but a couple of sources told me that Turkey is much more interesting and tourist-friendly than modern Morocco.

Really I need to haul my ass to St. Petersberg next year before I tackle any elaborate (and more expensive) plans.
