Hierarchy of Laowai in China
Those who come on tour groups look down on those who
would never dare travel to a “third world country”;
independent tourists look down on those who come on
tour groups; backpackers look down on independent
tourists; “hardcore” backpackers look down on the
other backpackers; English teachers look down on
backpackers; expats here on business look down on
English teachers; and the fucking reporters look down
on everybody.
Speaking Chinese knocks you up one category, as does
marrying Chinese or being a foreign-born Han. I have
yet to meet the top of the pyramid: an ABC who speaks
fluent Mandarin, married a local girl, and works for
the New York Times. But I’m sure he would look down on
all of us.

that seems perfectly attainable--if zhao yan were born in the states, that'd be him. oh wait, that also means he wouldn't be in jail now.silkworm wrote:an ABC who speaks fluent Mandarin, married a local girl, and works for the New York Times. But I’m sure he would look down on all of us.
Now that happy moment between the time the lie is told and when it is found out.
nyt researcher in beijing, jailed after predicting jiang zm's final exit from politics 2 days before it happened--jiang gave up his post as chairman of the central military commission. the funny thing is that it was sort of expected (of course there was speculation that jiang might hold on), and jiang did leave as predicted by the article, and then they locked him up. heh.
