Cinematography and Art design: Children of Men (I have not seen Pan's Labyrinth).
Best Supporting Actor: Steve Carell (Little Miss Sunshine) and Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls).
Poor Kate Winslet. Her repeated nomination without win was the subject of jokes in the HBO series Extras. Now here we go again. She has a snowball's chance in hell of winning this year, unlike Peter O'Toole.

Pan's Labyrinth defintely wins Art Design. Cinematography..I am so conflicted -- I love Children Of Men but I still have to give it to Pan's Labyrinth . Actually Babel should win that, but it is not nominated for it.

I saw Jennifer Hudson on Barbara Walters' pre-Oscar interview (what a gossipy program). She is such a lovely person. I'm not going to say "I hope she will not be changed by fame." Just at this moment she seems to be a confident, warm, open, unpretentious, and happy person. Even though she's not much of an actress and does not technically "deserve" to win best supporting actress award, so what? Awards have nothing to do with deserving. I just hope she gets to continue to do what she loves to do.
I almost passed out when I heard the stupid announcer said, "... based on the Japanese movie Infernal Affairs." I was fuming so hard (as a previously obsessive fan of HK cinema) that I wrote into Washington Post's online chat to protest.
But I don't think anybody else noticed the mistake. Bill Monahan mentioned the writers of 无间道 in his speech but did not mention their origin (Do Alan Mack and Felix Leung [?] sound Japanese???). Marty Scorsese was just rehashing his Golden Globe speech, in which he mentioned Andrew Lau's original Hong Kong production. The producer -- the gangster/mafia-looking Aussie guy -- did not say anything about Infernal Affairs.
I almost didn't recognize Ulrich Muhe in the audience (2 glimpses). He looked so small sitting next to Koch.
I had to laugh when poor Phil Hoffman gave the best actress award. He looked terrible in a suit -- and his horrible hair! You'd think he'd been living on the streets for the past month or something.
And he looked extremely uncomfortable, like he'd rather be swallowing earthworms than standing on that stage. I thought he was going to run off before he finished the speech.
