Post by Jun » 2008-02-08 15:00

1. Robert Parker "Cold Service",
2. Nick Hornby "Long Way Down",
3. Buckingham and Clifton "Now, Discovery Your Strength",
4. Kroeger and Thuesen "Type Talk at Work",
5. Carl Hiaasen "Skinny Dip".

What's Makioka Sister? Pray tell.

<Snow Flower and Secret Fan>,

Makioka Sister

:gromit_thought: :wallace_yell:

Jasper Fforde, "the eyre fair" and "the fourth bear". Both of them are very entertaining and with an extraordinary imagination.

Sorry my chinese input is not working. Otherwise, I could give you a more detailed description.

Jun, could you give me some recommendation on detective story too? I like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly. I love "the Lincoln Lawyer", although it's not exactly a detective story.

 Let me toot the horn for George Pelecanos ... OK, I've done plenty of that already.

I always recommend David Pirie's series to fans of Sherlock Holmes. So far he's had only 3 novels in the Conan Doyle/Joseph Bell series: The Patient's Eye, The Night Calls, and Dark Waters. He gets the slightly Gothic flavor of the original Holmes stories just right.

Also the detective novels by Henning Mankell, which I recommended several times before. And some of Jonathan Kellerman's psychology-based novels are OK if a bit long.

Also not conventional but easy and charming are Alexander McCall Smith's The No. 1 Lady's Detective Agency series.

I'm thinking about trying out two authors myself: David Balducci (political conspiracies set in DC) and Ian Rankin (police procedurals set in Edinburgh).

Outside of my own reading list, you can check out the annual nominations lists of the Edgar awards at http://www.theedgars.com or CWA Daggers awards at http://www.thecwa.co.uk/daggers/index.html for high-quality mysteries.

I actually prefer "Lincoln Lawyer" to the Harry Bosch series. Connelly is good at portraying middle-aged men.

Michael Connelly has Harry Bosch series, which are detective stories. I like his “ The Closers” and “Echo Park”.

I think maybe Lisa Scottoline’s books match Jun’s requirement. I recommend “Devil’s corner”. The story is about a female lawyer got involved with a crime investigation. So it could be qualified as a detective story.

<Snow Flower and Secret Fan>

CHRISTMAS GIFT.
