BASE METALS: LME Metals Rebound As Mkt Awaits News From China
By Devon Maylie
12 May 2008
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Base metals traded on the London Metal Exchange rebounded Monday as participants took advantage of a nervous market to buy following the major earthquake that rocked China early in the day.
The full effect of the 7.8-magnitude tremor - centered in the southwest province of Sichuan - is still unknown, but traders and analysts said they were expecting the situation to worsen in the coming days as more news filters out.
In the meantime, market players will likely cover short positions, said a London trader.
Another London broker said the Chinese earthquake will have a bigger impact on the LME base metals than anyone anticipates. He said the majority of operations in the area of the epicenter are lead and zinc underground mines.
Until news comes from China, market players will use the situation to push prices in their own preferred direction, the broker said.
LME copper closed the kerb up $161 from Friday's kerb at $$8,260 a metric ton, LME aluminum was up $47 at $2,927/ton, LME lead was up $54 at $2,245/ton, LME zinc was up $24 at $2,178/ton, LME tin was up $315 at $24,900/ton. The metals gained as news of deaths and power station closures filtered out of China, raising the possibility of halted metals production.
"By (Tuesday) you might find all base metals prices are higher and everyone will be saying it's because of this," a trader said.
LME nickel bucked the trend and ended down $175 at $26,500/ton.
With a holiday in continental Europe, volumes were relatively light at the LME, traders said.
Tin hit a record high of $25,000/ton and will continue to trade towards $27,000/ton, Barclays Capital said. Tin is getting support from ongoing supply concerns, with largest tin producer Indonesia consistently plagued by smelter shutdowns.
Another London broker said base metals were higher as fund money flowed into the metals component of an index as a U.S. dollar hedge.
