福尔莫斯和马普小姐
最近在坎福尔莫斯的历险与回忆录,不由得想起马普小姐来。此2人乃是侦探小说中著名的两个人物。福尔莫斯住伦敦贝壳街,职业侦探,擅长推理,听一遍事情经过往往能够就得出结论;马普小姐住乡下,老小姐,精于观察,多半通过以往案例-----她以前有个女佣如何如何性格,来推倒出结论。此二侦探同属早期破案小说中天才破案的典范,当然读起来有很具体的不同,最大的一点不一样就是福尔莫斯探案小说比较象智力游戏,马普小姐呢,对于案件中人物比较关怀。为哈会突然发出这种感慨呢,盖因今天早晨看了一个故事,跟乡绅有关的杀人事件,不知道为啥一下子想起来马普小姐的图书室里的尸体一案。马普小姐破案的最大动机倒不是惩罚凶手,而是为了澄清该乡绅的清白。马普小姐的生活中,社会舆论是一个重大的人言可畏的力量;福尔莫斯破的这个案子呢,倒是有个倒霉蛋儿已经个当成凶手抓而起来之了,这个破案的动力比较的显著。
总结的来说:福尔莫斯总给我一种智力游戏的赢家的感觉,倒是马普小姐更象社会正义的声音。
最后一点,就是福尔莫斯感慨说n多事实摆在面前,天才侦探需要学会区别哪个是重要事实,哪个是非重要事实。不免让我想起来勤勤恳恳的wallender,不放过任何一条线索,直至该线索被证明无关。

阿加莎小说里的事实常常摆出来给你看,有用的没用的让读者自己挑,自己猜。柯南道尔呢,多靠案件当事人自己叙说,或者福尔莫斯陈述他的观察。似乎有个客观和主观证据的区别。或者说看福尔莫斯探案猜结局比较困难。
The best of the Holmes stories are often more about atmosphere and adventure rather than solving puzzles, like his longer pieces (which are usually considered better than the short stories) Hound of the Baskervilles, Sign of Four, and Valley of Fear. The Gothic and colonialist elements in his stories are undeniable.
The best of Christie's stories are more about observation and insight into the psychology and dark secrets of seemingly ordinary people. My favorite is "Curtain." A recurrent theme in her stories is a person's dark past and how that affects his or her present.
Both authors get lazy and sloppy sometimes.
I often feel the lesser works of Christie are "not fair to the reader." Too many red herrings to distract the reader, then the murderer is revealed through a motive way into the person's past that we have no way of knowing. The most "fair" type must be police procedural type. We discover the elements of crime along with the detective.
